Deal collaboration
The Primary Owner, Co-Owners, Collaborators, and Followers on a deal — what each can do, how it affects editing, and what happens on owner reassignment.
Updated 2026-07-06
Beyond its Primary Owner, a deal can have a small team: Co-Owners, Collaborators, and Followers. Manage this from the Team section in the deal rail. Adding, removing, or changing anyone's role requires the deal.manage_team permission.
The four roles on a deal
| Role | Access |
|---|---|
| Primary Owner | Full edit. Exactly one per deal; set at creation or by reassignment. |
| Co-Owner | Always edit. Shares ownership-level access with the Primary Owner. |
| Collaborator | View by default when added; can be switched to Edit or back at any time. |
| Follower | Always view. Cannot be granted edit access. |
A person holds at most one of these roles on a given deal, and the Primary Owner can't also be a Co-Owner, Collaborator, or Follower on their own deal — they're already the owner.
How this affects editing
Whether someone can edit a deal they can already see comes down to which of these is true, checked in this order: they hold deal.edit_all (any accessible deal); they hold deal.edit_own and are the Primary Owner or a Co-Owner; they hold deal.edit_shared and are a Collaborator with Edit access; or they hold deal.edit_team and the deal belongs to a team they manage. A Follower never qualifies — followers are always view-only regardless of what permissions they hold.
Notifications
Adding someone to a deal's team, or making them the Primary Owner, notifies them. Removing them from the team also notifies them. Every add, remove, and ownership change is recorded in the deal's activity timeline as well.
Owner reassignment
Reassigning the Primary Owner (deal.manage_team) hands off full ownership to the new person. Two side effects happen automatically: if the new owner already had a role on the deal's team, that role is dropped so they're not both owner and, say, a Collaborator; and the previous owner is added to the team as a Follower, so they keep visibility into a deal they used to run. That demotion is skipped if the previous owner already holds a role on the team.
For the "My Deals" view, ownership means Primary Owner or Co-Owner. Collaborators and Followers are participants, not owners, and don't show up there.
